The obituary notice of David Harry WHITE

This is the eulogy from Dafydd's funeral. I'm happy to say a pergola has been built behind Our Lady Star of the Sea in his memory, with the Stations of the Cross. He'd have loved it!

I was lucky enough to consider Dafydd a very close friend. I knew him around town and funnily enough it was one of my sons who used to work in Jenkins, who chatted to him there, who introduced us.

Over recent years he used to pop into our shop in Burry Port and we would chat about anything and everything from politics to music, but especially theology and history for which we shared an interest.

Dafydd would often pull up a chair and sit while we chatted. When he mentioned he hadn’t been to Mass for a while, I suggested he came back as he obviously had a deep love for Christ and His church.

At Mass, we’d always sit quite close to each other and chat afterwards. When his infirmity meant he struggled to get to church from the home in Llanelli, we got to spend more time together in the car to and from Mass. He’d regale me with so many stories from his past we’d often end up in tears of laughter.

One thing he never lost right up until the very end was his wonderful sense of humour and his love for his Faith. He would often struggle to get here despite the pain of getting into and out of his wheelchair. When he was too ill he would confide that coming to Mass meant the world to him.

So many people around Burry Port and Llanelli knew Dafydd. He loved to go in the shops and have a chat. He enjoyed going to his favourite place to eat, Ruby’s, for a carvery. And he would buy his rum and raisin ice cream for dessert.

From his neighbours on Williams Terrace, to the shopkeepers, from his friends to his fellow parishioners. No one had a bad word to say about Dafydd. This was reflected in the fact that when he became ill, so many people asked after him, and wanted his contact details.

He was the quintessential Welsh gentleman. We’ll all miss him greatly. Rest In Peace my old friend.
