Jack PearsonSKERTCHLYdied, aged 93, on 20th May 2026, with his family at his side.

An inspirational teacher for many years at Ravensdale School, Mickleover, he was well-known as a brilliant card magician, "Jack of Diamonds", as well as being, in former years, a beekeeper, a radio ham and an archer.

Sadly, he outlived his son, Jeremy, but much loved and missed greatly by his daughter-in-law, Jane, his three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, his nieces and their families, and by his many friends.

The funeral service will take place on Monday 15th June 2026 at Markeaton Crematorium, round chapel at 10:30am.

Donations made in lieu will be sent Blind Veterans UK.

Jack was a friend for over 40 years since John Rossi introduced him to me as I had an interest in magic and he recommended Jack as the ideal tutor. We had regular meetings and as magic was a passion to him his instructions were invaluable to myself. As he aged and his eye sight got worse made his magic quite difficult yet he still continued. He lived alone for many years and lost touch with his family but contact recommenced when his only son, Jeremy, had an illness which sadly meant he passed away. Jack did what he could for the family left behind both as parental support and financial. God bless you Jack, you will be greatly missed, may you now rest in peace.

I was a pupil at Ravensdale Juniors and had the absolute pleasure of being in Mr Skertchly’s class in my 3rd year.
I have many fond memories of all the creative and wonderful things we made in class. Of particular note,…flashing LED circuit boards, abstracts made of wood and my personal favourite a boomerang that we flew on the school field! Good old days. Absolute legend. RIP.

I was in his class at Ravensdale. He was the best teacher. Firm but fair. Always found a way to get us engaged with what he was teaching. His magic act was the highlight of our school christmas party. A most amazing man. An honour to have known him.

Remembering a much loved teacher from my days at Ravensdale as a pupil, 50ish years ago now. Very sad to hear that he has passed away.
