Seventeen years have marched away
Since a soldier found his rest
A man of Para1 they say
who stood amongst the best
From the heights of Aldershot s
proud call
To the bricks of Ayr he laid
He built the town he built the walls
A legacy that will not fade
Ayr Hospital to the Old Brig
He worked with a steady hand
A Ayr lad whose heart was true
Across this local land.
In a white Ford Capri he d take the wheel with Marty Robbins on the air
A life of grit and honest Stella life beyond compare
He spoke of stars I Greenhouse
of Sinatra s tired face of Trovilla s dance on Prestwick ice with such a quiet grace.
But his brightest star was Margaret
The girl from the Newton Green
The finest skater on the rink
The best he d ever seen.
From York street s door they shared their years
A soulmate bond so deep
Through all the laughter and tears
A promise they would keep
And though he left us years ago
On this April second day
The path back to her side we know was never far away
Margaret s home at 56 is quite iin the sun
For she found her Jack again
the long journey is done.
No more regret s as Edith sang
No distance left to mend
Just a white sports coat and a pink carnation at the rainbows end.

Dad cannot believe it s 17year ago
