EdithRANSONEdith Evelyn Ranson, of Accrington, passed away peacefully at Moorhead Rest Home on Monday, September 13, aged 97. Edith was born in Ireland in 1924 to a farming family. Aged 11 she came to Oldham to live with Aunt Edie, to be educated in England. She flourished at school and went on to read geography and English at Sheffield University, before moving to Accrington in 1946 to teach at Accrington High School for Girls. She married Jim in 1952 and they enjoyed a long and happy marriage spanning 67 years until Jim’s death in 2019. After becoming Head of English at Overend School, Whitehaven in 1962 she returned to Accrington in 1969 and taught geography and English at St Augustine’s School, Billington until her retirement. She had a lifelong love of walking and Natural History and was a longstanding member of the Accrington Naturalist and Antiquarian Society. Edith was talented in sewing, quilting and embroidery and her eye for design and colour was really remarkable. Over the years she amassed a huge library of books, and in her retirement years she became a ‘whiz’ at crosswords and word puzzles, until her eyesight failed. Edith was also a talented cook and loved to pass on this enthusiasm to her family. She was a dearly beloved mum to David and Malcolm, and dear mother-in-law to Morag, loving granny to Sheila and Helen and great-granny to Ellie and Sophie. Her sister, Tillie was especially dear to her. A service and cremation will be held at Accrington Crematorium on Wednesday, September 29 at 1.40pm. Family flowers only please, and donations if desired in memory of Edith to Lancashire Wildlife Trust c/o funeral director at champfunerals. com/obituaries Funeral director: Champ Funeral Services, Clayton-le-Moors.
