CharlesPHILLIPSWilliam Derek We are sad to announce the passing of Charles William Derek Phillips (13.01.29 - 04.05.18) Born in Jamaica, trained in Belfast, he worked for many years as a GP in Slaithwaite, Yorkshire and retired to Hythe, Kent. Derek was a pacifist, erstwhile member of the Society of Friends, conservationist, gardener and founder of the Colne Valley Tree Society. He campaigned on issues of the environment, human rights and justice, writing letters, planting trees, demonstrating on behalf of refugees, and over the years supported many organisations including Friends of the Earth, the Liberal Democrats, Kent Wildlife, the Woodland Trust, the Green Party and Green Christian. Throughout his life, Derek sought personal peace, despite tragedy: the loss of a young mother, then his wife and later his son, all of which left him deeply wounded, Still, he strived for peace and godliness, often frustrated at their elusiveness until now. Derek leaves his loving wife Zoe, children, grandchildren, sibling, nephews, nieces, godchildren and other cherished relatives and friends all over the world who remember him with love and respect. The funeral will be held at St Leonard's Church, Hythe at 12pm on Thursday 24th May. May he rest in Peace. All enquiries Sterry's of Hythe 01303 264400
