I first met Roy more than fifty years ago when, as a young child, I knew him as the quiet, gentle mechanic who worked at my parents’ garage. He was calm, kind, and unassuming — and he remained that way throughout his life. Whenever we bumped into one another over the years, there was always time for a friendly chat, and in more recent years for the occasional ice-cream and a catch-up. Roy was someone you could always rely on, especially when there was some welding required, what a talent he had for that. He will be deeply missed by his many friends; he was a genuinely special man and I will always remember him with great fondness.

Mr Marriot.

Thank you for all the kindness and help over the last 14 years that I had the privilege of knowing you. You repaired many pieces of metal others told me wouldn't be possible.

On the day I was told we had lost you, I had been busy in the garage breaking something else and thinking I best give Roy a call in the new year, he will be able to weld this up for me. Which reminded me of the many times he would ring our workshop and open with “is there anybody there?” Alsa we now know this won’t happen anymore. Sad as this is, I have decided that I should learn to TIG weld, at least in small part to try and carry on the great work you carried out.

A slightly unusal photo, but I have chosen to share the last piece of work Roy did for me. To his usual inpectable standard.

In our thoughts always.

Roy was a dear and constant friend to three generations of my family - my parents, my three children, and me. Each relationship was shaped by his quiet kindness, deep respect for others, modesty, and that unmistakable warmth which made everyone feel valued in his presence.

He was an expert in many things, most visibly in his engineering and welding, but his greatest mastery was in how he treated people. Roy gave endlessly of his time, skills, and emotional support, never measuring effort or counting the cost to himself. He stood beside people through their hardest moments with patience, humour, and unwavering generosity.

Only now, in his absence, do we fully see the depth of what he gave - a legacy woven from countless acts of kindness, care, and selflessness that touched more lives than he ever realised.

I was privileged to have Roy’s friendship and guidance for many years, especially through some of my most challenging times. He always arrived with a smile and reassuring words, whatever the hour. We also shared many wonderful trips together, often centred around motorsport or aviation, and he had a rare ability to savour both the journey and the quiet beauty of the world around him.

Roy’s sudden passing leaves a deep and lasting emptiness in our family. Yet his legacy lives on in the memories we hold, the laughter he shared, and the example he set for how to live a good and generous life. In time, those memories will bring comfort and remind us just how fortunate we were to have known him.

Knowing Roy as we all do, I’m certain that he will already be busy repairing and improving the hinges and clasps on the gates of heaven for Saint Peter.

Rest in peace Roy - your legacy lives on, and you will never be forgotten.

Roy has been a good friend for the best part of 70 years. A great help in this time,to myself and many others. For half of these 70 years Ilived overseas, thousands of miles away. With a quick call to Roy, I knew he would have a solution to the problem in hand and take any action required on my behalf.
RIP my dear friend. You will be missed.
