Itwas early 60"s I was a youngster playing for my local team."Dewi Stars" in Llanddewi Brefi. This big bloke with black curly hair came on the pitch. True to his current form and his build he trampled all over us. Someone mentioned he was a copper in Aber someone else said that he was from Lampeter. ...This was Watkin Lowe..aka Wat.
Move on some years I was a young village Bobby stationed in Llangennech, Llanelli. I'd arrested a local and recovered the briefcase and cash stolen from the film set of "Young Winstone" whilst filming in the Morlais Colliery. Llangennech. Our Div CID got involved (initially I wasn't happy..) until Wat turned up. Great...
Job done and anticipating some recognition from the film Director Richards Attenborough. It never transpired....ugh...
The upside of this episode I was later an AID to CID. Working with the big man. Brilliant no stress. He was fair but again as a youngster and keen he kept a tight reign on me.
After a period on Llanelli CID and two attachements on No 8 RCS Iretired and set up JC Investigations and once again we crossed paths as Wat was doing the same line of business in Tenby after he retired.
There followed many years of genuine partnership when it was required . I was fortunate to have a truly trusted friend if I needed advice or assistance.
He smiled from ear to ear when he collected a cherry tree which I had felled frpm my garden and from that tree he wood turned many objects which he sold all of the proceeds he and Sheila donated to their charity..
My condolences to you all within Wats' family.
Unfortunately I will not be able to attended the service in Cardiff as I'm in my place on the Costa until the end of tge month.
So in ending my tribute to you I'm raising my glass of beer...Salude Wat. Its been a privilage knowing and working with you. ..RIP.
