BrendaLONG (NEE GUILFOYLE)of Lupin Close, Accrington passed away peacefully with her devoted daughter by her side on Tuesday, January 17, aged 85 years. Brenda was the beloved wife of the late Gordon, much loved mother to Wendy and son-in-law Ian and much-loved aunty. Brenda was born and brought up in Altham West in 1937. On leaving school Brenda, aged 16, began work at CWS Hambledon Mill as a weaver. It was there she met her future husband Gordon, whom she married in 1959. They were married for almost 60 years until Gordon passed away in 2018. When Hambledon Mill closed, Brenda went to work at the DHSS in Melbourne Street, Accrington for almost 30 years until her retirement aged 65. Following a brief rest, Brenda then started part time work at The Masonic Hall in Accrington. Both of these jobs meant the world to her; she loved meeting, chatting to and helping people. Since attending night-school in her late teens Brenda always loved sewing, making clothes for herself and Wendy, home furnishings and bridesmaids dresses for friends and family. Brenda loved going out on day trips to Cleveleys and Fleetwood with her friends or visiting Bury Market with Wendy. Gordon and Brenda both enjoyed charity shops and car boot sales both as visitors and vendors. Brenda suffered a stroke aged 80, which left her immobile. Brenda always remained positive and lived in the hope that one day she would walk again. Sadly, it was not to be. Brenda’s funeral will take place on Monday, February 6 at Accrington Crematorium at 11am. Brenda requested for bright colours to be worn. Family flowers only please, donations to East Lancashire Hospice via Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington.
