DerekLANGIn loving memory of Derek Lang, who passed away on April 4 in the Belvedere Care Home, Accrington, aged 86 years. Devoted husband of 60 years to the late Janet Lang, cherished father of Sarah and Elizabeth and dear grandad of Geneva, Oscar, Zara, Yolanda and Finlay. Born in Accrington on November 14 1936, Derek developed an early passion for the piano and became an accomplished concert pianist. He studied music at the Royal Academy of Music, Manchester and, during his youth, toured around the north of England as a musician with the dance bands of the Ume. He later set up his own piano school and tutored many local pupils over a period of 40 plus years. A music teacher at Mansfield High School in Brierfield and backing artist in the many working men’s clubs around East Lancashire, Derek worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Derek and Janet loved to travel, enjoying many lovely summer holidays with their caravan in France, Cornwall and favourites spots such as the Cotswolds, as well as cruises and visiting their daughters abroad. Derek was always a loyal supporter of Accrington Stanley and was happiest when attending the home matches with his friends, grumbling about them losing. Derek loved to keep active and in later life enjoyed Crown Green bowling in Oak Hill Park with his friends. He kept himself busy with crosswords and quiz shows and walked every day, especially during lockdown. Derek will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends. A service to celebrate his life will be held at Accrington Crematorium on Friday, April 28 at 1pm. Family flowers only please, donations in memory of Derek are being gratefully received on behalf of Alzheimer’s Society c/o champfunerals.com/ obituaries All enquiries to Champ Funeral Services, Bank House, Whalley Road, Clayton Le Moors, Accrington BB5 5DY Tel: 01254 390731
