I have known Steve since our time at Nottinghan University in the early 1970s and my earliest detailed memory is staying in his flat on the top floor of a large Victorian mansion known as The Chestnuts in the Park, Nottingham and going to see the film Towering Inferno, and afterwards discussing in detail our escape route from The Chestnuts in the event of fire.
Over the years many memories of times spent with Steve including a holiday camping in Scotland in 1976. Steve was always keen on adventure and told me about the months he spent living in Fiji in the 1970s. He got on so well with the locals in a particular village that they provided him with food and his own hut, and also when he had been there longer they offered him a wife.

In later years I remember Steve's incredible fortitude and positive outlook as he lost sight in one eye and then some months later in the other eye before he was actually diagnosed with MS. It was truly remarkable how Steve coped with his new condition. Although he could no longer play the guitar and had to give up painting he found other outlets for his creativity. It is a wonderful achievement that despite having virtually no vision he was still able to write and publish half a dozen books including a collection of poems on subjects that interested him. I believe he also broadcast on local radio and acted as a counselor for others suffering from MS.
The three words which come to mind when I think of Steve are courage, determination and honesty. You could talk to Steve about anything and he would always tell you in a considered and truthful way what he thought on the subject.
Steve had a great wry sense of humour and when discussing politics or the state of the world it was a joy to hear his withering comments on our leaders and politicians.
Steve was a wonderful person and a really good friend who I shall very much miss.

Stephen was our brother-in-law. He was creative, caring and loved the natural world. All who met him found him very personable, you could always have an interesting conversation, he knew so much about a wide range of subjects.

In 2024 we had a wonderful holiday in Walchensee, Germany, with Elisabeth and Stephen. September sunshine, a beautiful lake and a magnificent backdrop of Bavarian Alps.

The highlight of the week was a trip on the cable car up the Herzogstand Mountain, on what was Elisabeth and Stephen’s 25th wedding anniversary. With an elevation of 1,731 metres there was a sprinkling of snow at the top and we were all stunned by the incredible views. However, for Stephen it was something extra special. In recent years he’d missed being able to walk on hills and mountains so this setting filled him with the utmost joy and contentment. Even with his limited sight, he could enjoy the feeling of being in such a large expanse of open space which felt like standing on top of the world.

We have some very special memories of that week and we feel privileged to have shared this time with Stephen and Elisabeth.

Stephen will be greatly missed, may he rest in peace.
