LeonardHERBERTMr Leonard Herbert, of Oswaldtwistle, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife Patricia Anne on Thursday, August 11, aged 85. Lennie was born on August 7, 1937 at Dunnyshop Avenue, Accrington, from where, at two years old, he moved to Corporation Street, Accrington. He was the youngest brother of the late Norman, Gladys, and Ralph. He attended St Peter’s School and, after passing his 11 Plus, then attended Accrington Secondary School for Boys in Oswaldtwistle. After leaving school he had many jobs, some of the longest being at English Electric, Burco in Burnley, and retiring from the position of Regional Sales Manager for JVC at the age of 62. He was the youngest class 3 referee in Lancashire at the age of 16. He was a founder member, along with his friend David Tomlinson, of Lennie and the Teenbeats in the early 60s, which later was named Mark Day and the Knights. In 1968 he became drummer compere at the Poplar Club in Accrington, also serving on the committee. He later became president of the club, and was known to many as Mr Charity as a result of the thousands of pounds he raised for local charities at the club. He continued his charity work when he joined the Rotary at Church and Oswaldtwistle, and later became president of this club. He left the rotary due to his ill health, but continued to be a friend of rotary for many years. He served in the Lancashire Special Constabulary, rising to Divisional Commander. He was a season ticket holder at Blackburn Rovers up until around 2013. He loved to travel, his passion being Cyprus, where his ashes are to be instilled in the bell tower of a small church in Fillusia, Cyprus by his dear friend Jimmy Tsadious. He leaves his loving wife Patricia Anne, three children, four grandchildren, stepson, sister/brother-in-law, and was a dear friend to many. The funeral will take place at 3pm on Friday, August 26, at Burnley Road Crematorium, Accrington, Family flowers only, but donations to North West Air Ambulance Charity via funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services, Accrington.
