I met Pauline back in the 1970s when we both worked at Hush Episcopi School. I was immediately drawn to her because she was a larger than life dedicated and inspirational teacher and I was in awe of her creativity and intelligence. We worked together on a drama project we called “Pioneers and Indians” which, in the words of our head teacher Mr Saunders,“caused quite a stir.” Our best time was when we were at Girton together (for a week!) learning from the great Professor Rex Gibson how to make Shakespeare alive in the classroom. It was a brilliant experience and we had a lot of fun. Prof Gibson dubbed us “amazing ladies” which we often remind ourselves over the years.
Pauline was also a very special friend; she was fun, loyal, supportive and tremendously generous. Derek and I have so many memories of happy times with her and with Steve (they were so entertaining in both senses of the word)in Somerset, London and France. She was of course a brilliant cook and the parties in Drayton were wonderful. I don’t have so many memories in recent years because of the dreadful disease which is no respecter of persons and often seems to choose the most intelligent people, like her literary hero Terry Pratchett. Our sympathy is for Steve, Mark, Philippa and their children at this time. Bless you Pauline, you were a force of nature and gave so much to so many.
