NormanELSEElse, Norman, formerly of Ripley and Belper, died on April 6th aged 91 years, in Kelling Hospital, Holt, Norfolk. Loving husband of the late Ruth, he was very proud of son Jonathan and daughter Kathryn and adored his six grandsons. Educated at Swanwick Hall Grammar School, where he became Head Boy, Norman graduated from Nottingham University with Honours in Mathematics. He began a teaching career which took him as Head of Maths to Ecclesbourne School, Duffield, where the school's success in this subject was said to be largely attributable to him. Norman went on to be Deputy Headteacher of Rutland Sixth Form College, Oakham, and subsequently Headmaster of the Neale-Wade School, March, Cambridgeshire. He retired in 1992. The funeral will be held in St. Margaret's Church, Cley, on Friday 21st April at 11.00 a.m. If anyone would like to make a donation in his memory, cheques payable to the charity 'Glaven Caring' can be sent to Lloyd Durham Funeral Service, 11a Avenue Road, High Kelling, NR25 6RD, or donations can be made online at www.northnorfolkfuneralservices.co.uk

The first proper mathematics teacher we had at the Ecclesbourne School. He set me up well for a career in mathematics which took me to Princeton, Oxford, Warwick and Cambridge.

Norman was a fine cricketer with Butterley in the ‘50s/‘60s when they won the league around 10 consecutive seasons.
Happy memories.

Was Norman my maths teacher at Bemrose Grammar School, Derby, in 1958? If so, my condolences to all, he was a really nice man, one of my all-time favourite teachers. Very sad.
