Major James AnthonyDOHERTY (BEM)Born in Derry on 17th July 1941, sadly left us 17th April 2026.

James spent his childhood growing up in Derry, and abroad, including in Tripoli and Beirut where his dad was stationed. He became a junior soldier and what followed was over 48 years of service to Her Majesty as part of the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME) and the Territorial Army. He undertook numerous tours in places like Aden, Canada, Brunei, Hong Kong, Northern Ireland and many years in Germany as part of the British Army of the Rhine. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1970 for his exceptional service. In 1975 he was commissioned an Officer, later rising to Major, before leaving to serve in the Territorial Army. What followed was a 22 year tenure in the 250 Field Ambulance Medical Corps in Hull. James latterly took up the career of a Maths Teacher and taught until his 80th birthday, enjoying the sense of achievement in inspiring his students with his enthusiasm and practical approach.

Throughout his life he was a devoted family man and a loving husband. Alongside Mary they raised 3 children and provided them with immense opportunities and life experiences as they grew up. James was a witty, upbeat and fun person to be around, often sharing amusing tall stories of his career exploits. Church was immensely important to him as a devout Catholic, and he took pride in being part of the inter-faith community no matter where he lived.

Inseparable from his childhood love, Mary, they enjoyed their quieter retirement years reading, gardening and visiting places & family.

Survived by Mary, his grateful children; Karen, Pauline and Kiernan, his six grandchildren and his four sisters - there are no words that can adequately describe James, how much he truly meant or how much he will be missed.

A Requiem Mass will take place on Friday 15th May, at St Augustine Webster Church, Barton-upon-Humber, 11:00am.

Family flowers only please, by request. We kindly ask instead of sending flowers or gifts; if people wish to donate to a charity, the family are supporting Cancer Research UK. Donations may be left at the service, or sent direct to the charity via this site.
