SaumelBURKEBorn in Salford, 19th June 1918, sadly died in Harrogate Hospital on 12th June 2020, a few days before his 102nd birthday. He entered hospital with an extremely painful but non-life threatening condition, where sadly he contracted Covid 19. His mother married Joseph Dillon after the loss of her husband in India and the families moved to Marple in the late 1930s. He married a local girl, Nora Heath with whom he had two children, Val and Wendy and is survived by five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He served throughout WW2 in the Cheshire regiment and rejoined the Regiment after the war. He transferred to the Education Corp, gained a Technical Lecturer qualification and after a brief spell teaching in College, joined the Army Artillery Training School for Boys as a Civilian Instructor. He retired at 65 years of age along with his wife to live in Norbury Avenue, Marple. He was a man of many parts, taught himself to play the guitar, painted water-colours of the locality and was an enthusiastic walker of the hills. He may be better recognised for his other passion - a keen member of the Bowling Green Quiz team, he was proud of their achievement in winning the Stockport and District championship. As an ex-military man, he enjoyed his pint and could be regularly found in the Jolly Sailor, Navigation and Bowling Green. After the sad loss of his beloved wife, Nora in 1998, he continued to live in Marple for several years but this became more difficult and he moved to Wetherby, West Yorkshire where he had the support of his son and family. He remained fiercely independent right through to his death. He will be missed by all those he knew him and those who were schooled by him. Enquiries to G.E. Hartley & Son, Wetherby. Tel. 01937 588888.

This World has lost a true gentleman. Never forgotten by his Salford family, even after we lost touch. Goodnight and God bless Uncle Sam XX
