Professor Michael GrahamBRADFORDPROFESSOR BRADFORD MICHAEL GRAHAM PhD Cantab 06 December 1944, Carshalton, Surrey passed away at home on 12th July 2019 from cancer. He was the much loved husband of 50 years of Sheila Kaplan and was a well-respected professor of Geography at Manchester University, where his career included Undergraduate Dean 1994 -1996 and Head of Department from 1996 - 2000. From 2001 to 2005, he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor responsible for teaching and learning within the University and then as Associate Vice President 2006. Research interests included urban policy evaluation as well as inequalities in both education and health care. Michael was widely recognised as a gifted teacher and lecturer, receiving awards including a Distinguished Achievement Medal - Teacher of the Year 2005; an HEFCE National Teaching Fellowship 2006; and the Taylor and Francis Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Geography and Higher Education from the RGS 2008. He was known nationally and internationally for innovations in HE, with many publications in journals and books. Educating and nurturing young people pervaded his life, including supervision of many PhD completions over the years. He was actively involved in school geography curriculum development and was President of the National Geographical Association 1999-2000 as well as being an active member of the local GA committee. His interests were wide ranging, from politics to cinema to travel to sports. Being a multi-sports player and fan, he followed rugby, cricket, football and golf and was a lifelong supporter of Arsenal Football Club. At the local squash club, he was a committee member and coached juniors for years, serving also on the whole club executive. He was part of Bramhall Community Council 1980s and was a trustee of Bramall Hall Restoration Fund. Beyond all this, his raison d'être was to eliminate inequality and promote social justice across the world. He was a committed environmentalist and wanted to stop profligate use of fossil fuels. As a kind and caring person, he always had time for others. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, colleagues and students, who valued his inspiration and guidance. There will be a private funeral held for Michael with details to follow of a celebration of his life to be held in the University. Donations if desired can be made in Michael's memory to The Christie Charitable Fund, all enquiries to be made to Ben Lloyd Funeral Director's 0161-485-3135.
