Professor Michael GrahamBRADFORDPROFESSOR BRADFORD MICHAEL GRAHAM PhD Cantab 06 December 1944, Carshalton, Surrey passed away at home on 12th July 2019 from cancer. He was the much loved husband of 50 years of Sheila Kaplan and was a well-respected professor of Geography at Manchester University, where his career included Undergraduate Dean 1994 -1996 and Head of Department from 1996 - 2000. From 2001 to 2005, he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor responsible for teaching and learning within the University and then as Associate Vice President 2006. Research interests included urban policy evaluation as well as inequalities in both education and health care. Michael was widely recognised as a gifted teacher and lecturer, receiving awards including a Distinguished Achievement Medal - Teacher of the Year 2005; an HEFCE National Teaching Fellowship 2006; and the Taylor and Francis Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Geography and Higher Education from the RGS 2008. He was known nationally and internationally for innovations in HE, with many publications in journals and books. Educating and nurturing young people pervaded his life, including supervision of many PhD completions over the years. He was actively involved in school geography curriculum development and was President of the National Geographical Association 1999-2000 as well as being an active member of the local GA committee. His interests were wide ranging, from politics to cinema to travel to sports. Being a multi-sports player and fan, he followed rugby, cricket, football and golf and was a lifelong supporter of Arsenal Football Club. At the local squash club, he was a committee member and coached juniors for years, serving also on the whole club executive. He was part of Bramhall Community Council 1980s and was a trustee of Bramall Hall Restoration Fund. Beyond all this, his raison d'être was to eliminate inequality and promote social justice across the world. He was a committed environmentalist and wanted to stop profligate use of fossil fuels. As a kind and caring person, he always had time for others. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, colleagues and students, who valued his inspiration and guidance. There will be a private funeral held for Michael with details to follow of a celebration of his life to be held in the University. Donations if desired can be made in Michael's memory to The Christie Charitable Fund. All enquiries to be made to Ben Lloyd Funeral Director's 0161 485 3135.

I was one of Michael's first research students in 1975. Having achieved what he saw as M.A. standard he encouraged me to transfer directly to a Ph.D. program at UEA where I worked under Dr Malcolm Moseley. I remained in contact with Michael, especially when I worked at Homerton College, Cambridge and used his book so intensively with budding geography teachers.
He was so supportive, so stimulating intellectually in conversation, so kind - what a loss .... I am too choked to write more.

Mike was a very enthusiastic and supportive friend colleague and Head of Department to me over my 30 years at Manchester.

When I joined the Extra Mural Department as a Staff Tutor in Geography in 1975 Mike encouraged me to work with Geography. We jointly developed some of the first hands-on microcomputer courses for Geography undergraduates in the late 70's.

I transferred to the Geography Department in 1986 in slightly controversial circumstances. Mike was unstinting in his support and encouragement. He gave me a great deal of freedom to develop the Regional Research Laboratory and the GIS curriculum in the department, while ensuring I still did as much generic teaching and administration as my colleagues.

He was my internal PhD examiner and was supportive of a slightly unusual thesis which he described as "an account of 10 years of participative observation action research". He was also very supportive, given his love of the USA, to the, then slightly adventurous, New York Field Trip for Geography undergraduates.

I owe much of the satisfaction of my career to him. He has gone too soon. I will miss Him.

I have only just heard of the passing of my wonderful Professor. I had the honor of his teachings from 1992 to 1995 as an undergraduate at Univ of Manchester School of Geography. He was a turn inspiration, I found his courses highly interesting an inspiring.

Later on Prof. Bradford organised a 200 yr School of Geography at Manchester reunion. I met him again and thanked him for his inspirational teachings, which I'm sure helped me in my professional life.

One of life's greats. Thank you for all your dedication to young people

Like many of my generation I got to know Michael through his seminal A level books written with Ashley Kent. Meeting him in person was a great experience and one soon realised his passion for Geography. His walks around Manchester at various GA conferences were not to be missed if only for the VIMTO bottle!! Thanks for everything Michael.
