Derek was our apprentice master from 1988 until he retired shortly afterwards at the ROF in Birtley. He was hard but very fair with us young lads. Had a great dry sense of humor and taught us so much about engineering. Was very fond of him. A true gentleman. Glad he had a long and hopefully happy retirement. I’ll keep my hands out of my pockets, Mr Hume…Rest in Peace.

Similarly, I have just heard today about the passing of Mr Hume, who was our Apprentice Master at the Royal Ordnance Factory Birtley. Derek was a man who made such a positive influence on many young lads life’s, teaching them many engineering principles and most importantly, respect within the work place. I’m now 54 and still use one of his favourite lines with the many young lads I have worked with in industry over the years ‘Hands out your pockets young man ! ‘ RIP Derek, many thanks for the learnings you gave me and many others, passing deepest sympathy to the family, sorry I missed the celebration of his life, Simon Miller

I just heard today from an old colleague that Derek had sadly passed. He was my Apprentice Master from 1988 -1992 at ROF Birtley. A true gentleman and mentor, he taught us more then Engineering, he taught us about life and turned us into young men. For that I'll be eternally grateful. Rest in Peace Derek.
